Jose Mourinho’s top four comments come back to haunt him

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned things around at Old Trafford following Mourinho’s departure

Jose Mourinho declared Manchester United needed a miracle to finish in the top four this season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has put them there after just seven weeks in charge.

The Red Devils are unbeaten following Mourinho’s sacking, with eight league wins from nine under their new interim boss.

They were languishing eleven points adrift of fourth when Solskjaer took charge in December, but their sensational resurgence has seen them climb above Chelsea and into the Champions League qualification spots.

Speaking to Brazilian outlet RedeTV after December’s 2-2 draw at Southampton, Mourinho said: “Last year, we said that getting in second place was a fantastic thing due to the qualities we had compared to the qualities of the other teams fighting for the top four.

“Try to win as many points as possible and try almost the miracle to end in fourth.”

The end of Mourinho’s tenure was dominated by bizarre press conferences and reported training ground bust ups with Paul Pogba.

And the French World Cup winner has been the star of the show since Mourinho left, with eight goals in nine games, including a brace in the 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
