It appears the Brazilian is one that got away from Old Trafford

It has been claimed in the past that both Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Lucas Moura for Manchester United.

The Brazilian winger, now at Tottenham, scored twice in the Red Devils’ humiliating home defeat to Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Monday night.

Lucas bagged Spurs second and third goals in their 3-0 win at Old Trafford

However, before the Argentinian boss secured his signature, it appears both Manchester United’s past and present managers failed to sign him.

Sir Alex Ferguson was of course first to chase his signature, with the club reportedly having made multiple bids for him in 2012 before PSG leapfrogged them with a £38m offer which made Lucas the club’s record signing at the time.

Four years later, in 2016, Lucas’ own agent Wagner Ribeiro revealed that Jose Mourinho was also showing an interest in signing him.

Ribeiro declared that Mourinho wanted his man while at Real Madrid, and carried his interest over to Old Trafford.

“Who called Lucas Moura there [to Real Madrid]? It wasn’t Florentino Perez who wanted Lucas Moura, it was Mourinho,” said Ribeiro.

“Mourinho was and is passionate about Lucas Moura. So much so that now at Manchester he wants Lucas as well.”

He ended up staying at PSG that year, before finally making his English move in January 2018, when he joined Spurs for around £25m.
