The Spurs winger is set to feature for South Korea at the tournament in the United Arab Emirates
Son Heung-min has been in superb form for Tottenham this season – when he’s actually been in the country to play, that is.
Fresh from his World Cup exploits with South Korea last summer, Son was back on the international stage at the Asian Games throughout August and September.
He led his country to glory in Indonesia – gaining exemption from military service in doing so – and he’ll be looking for more silverware at the upcoming Asian Cup.
South Korea are favourites to win in the United Arab Emirates with the tournament running from January 5 until the final in Abu Dhabi on February 1.
But while Son is eyeing more international glory this winter, Tottenham will be gutted to see him go.
Son has notched a stunning eight goals and seven assists in Spurs’ last 11 Premier League games.
He was in fine form yet again in their 3-0 win at Cardiff on New Year’s Day and Mauricio Pochettino will know losing him is a big blow.
Son Heung-min – When will he leave? Will he face Chelsea and Man United?
Son has agreed with the KFA (Korea Football Association) to join up with his South Korea team-mates late for the Asian Cup.
He will miss their opening two Group C games against Philippines and Kyrgyzstan before linking up with the team prior to their final group tie against China on January 16.
That means Son will be able to play in Tottenham’s next fixture – the Premier League visit of Manchester United this Sunday.
Son Heung-min – How many Tottenham games will he miss?
Should South Korea reach the final of the Asian Cup, Son will miss at least four Tottenham fixtures.
He will be out of the Premier League games against Fulham, Watford and Newcastle and the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg against Chelsea.
Spurs then face Leicester in the top-flight on February 10 and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League three days later.
While Son should be back for those fixtures, it remains to be seen what affect his performances in the UAE will have on him.
Son Heung-min – What has the Tottenham star said?
Speaking after the win at Cardiff, Son said: “Of course I feel very sorry because I miss already in September.
“I feel sorry for my team-mates, the fans and the coaching staff. It’s difficult. Sometimes you think it’s a bit sad, but it is also important for my country.
“I hope I can keep my form for the national team and when I come back here again as well.”
