Atletico Madrid v Chelsea
One of the standout matches in the Champions League in midweek is in Spain.
Atletico Madrid, who have recently lost two finals to Real Madrid, welcome Chelsea to their brand new Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Wednesday.
Chelsea started their UCL campaign in style. Antonio Conte’s charges thumped Qarabag 6-0 in their opener.
As for Atletico, they were held to a 0-0 draw away at Roma.
Focus Diego Costa
There are several subplots to this week’s Champions League game.
Thibaut Courtois will be a focus for attention as the Belgium stopper made a name for himself with the Rojiblancos.
However that’s a secondary story after Diego Costa completed his move back to Atletico last week from Chelsea.
Costa is only able to turn out for Atletico in January when Madrid’s transfer embargo ends.
Courtois & Fabregas
Ahead of the game, Chelsea stars Courtois and Cesc Fabregas have spoken about Costa’s Chelsea exit.
Courtois spoke highly of the Brazilian-born Spanish international speaking to Spanish paper AS:
I have been with the guy for six years and he is a very good friend of mine. It will be nice to see him there.
I always said Diego was a great striker in England. They put too much attention on him about what he was doing sometimes and not enough on his qualities.
He is one of the nicest guys I know and a top striker as well.
Cesc Fabregas echoed those sentiments in a conversation with Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
Confirming the huge impact Costa had at Stamford Bridge, Cesc said:
He will always be in my heart.
He’s a great guy, I spoke to him on Saturday when he was watching (Atletico’s) game – we enjoyed a spectacular connection both on and off the pitch.
He is a great friend of mine and we spent three memorable years together in London, winning a lot and enjoying success.
