MUSC’s U13 girls’ premier team, the Black Magic, has gotten their 2010 season off to a fast start by winning the prestigious Premier Division of the Spirit United tournament. The Black Magic defeated:

-         Amity Blue Lightning 5-1

-         Washington Township SA Wave 1-0

-         AC Perugia USA Grifos 2-0 (semi-finals)

-         FC Lehigh 97 1-0 (Finals - 2nd OT).

Scoring in the first game were Jenny Sheppard (2), Jani Johnston, Sarah Walker and Sydnee Towns. Maria Thomas scored the only goal in the Washington Township game. In the semi-final game, Maria Thomas scored twice on direct kicks to send the Black Magic into the finals. At the end of regulation and the first overtime period, the score was tied at 0-0. Sydnee Towns scored on a breakaway off a pass from Kristina Miller one minute into the 2nd OT to give MUSC the championship.

It took an entire team effort over two days to earn the championship. Anneliese Jennings played solidly in goal all weekend. The defense was led by Erica DeCandido, Kelsey Burns, Jorden Johnson and Jani Johnston. The midfield and striker positions were manned by Maria Thomas, Hannah Alexander, Megan Swintosky, Shelby Chiodo, Kate Diveny, Kristina Miller, Jenna Silverman and Julianne LaSanta. The head coach of the team is Steve Whitby assisted by Bill Diveny.

A week earlier, the Black Magic went undefeated in the Colleen Reilly tournament, but placed second to the Freehold SL Spirit. In this tournament, the Black Magic:

-         defeated Warrington SC Freedom 2-0

-         tied USTA Strikers 1-1

-         defeated Ukrainian Nationals 3-1

-         defeated Pearls Pride 1-0 in a rain shortened game.

The Black Magic and the Freehold SL Spirit finished with the same number of points, but Freehold was declared the winner based on goal differential.
